High five for Friday!

Hip-hip hooray! It's Friday! This week has been a little 'off' for us. I was working the majority of the week, while jimmy hung out around the house with James!

A few highlights from this week:

James started crawling! Say whhaat!? I can't believe the little dude has learned to cruise around so quickly! All it took was an Ellendale Bakery doughnut! (who wouldn't crawl for one of those??!) It's a daily occasion to sit him down, turn around to grab something, only to turn back around to an empty spot on the floor where we left the child. This is followed by a fast heartrate and nerve-wracking game of hide and seek. James favorite places to escape to are the bathroom, our bedroom and to the tv cable In the corner-Little stinker! Here are some photos of his shenanigans for your enjoyment!

I rearranged the kitchen! (Is that possible?) anyways I moved around a few things to gain a bit more counter space. I'm not quite sure how I feel about the microwave in the "dining room"... We will see how Long it lasts! (please excuse the sub-par photos...)

I went from being an administrative assistant at work to being the Assistant Director of Distance Education. I'm pretty excited for the coming semester and for my new team! I'm thankful for a job I love!  I also got a new office, I'm moving In today!!

James fought off his upper respiratory infection like a champ.... Only to get strep! He's doing well! I am thankful for antibiotics and praying that jimmy and I stay healthy, especially since he starts school next Wednesday!

That's all that been going on around these parts! Have a wonderful weekend.

High Five for Friday!

Yay! It's the weekend! It's been a busy, wonderful first week of 2014 around these parts. James cut another tooth, I wandered Target, spent a few hours at work er... drinking coffee and hanging out with my awesome coworkers... My parents came to visit and we held the second half of our Christmas. Our weekend plans include bowling and doughnuts. can it get any better? It has been brutally cold here like -25 and 30 mph winds. I am thankful for our warm apartment. I learned how to "arm knit" last night. I made a scarf, its fab.
I also ate my first pomegranate today. Can you say DELICIOUS?! Hello beautiful flavor! I hope you all had a wonderful week!

Finger Foods for Babies!

We have begun the adventure of finger foods! Boy, let me tell ya, it is nice to have James busy so I can enjoy a hot meal again! I thought I would share a few foods he loves and a few we are going to be trying!

Squash
I boiled little pieces of squash and then melted some butter on them, James (and his daddy!) both enjoyed it. Although it was a little slippery for his tiny fingers.

Green Beans
James HATES baby food green bean puree. hates. The look he gave his Grandma Eilene (complete horror and disgust) was the end of that. Fresh beans, however, are a favorite! Either organic canned beans warmed up and cut into baby bite sized pieces or fresh string beans steamed, sauteed or boiled till they are soft work great!

Freeze Dried Apples
These are a favorite of both James and me! I picked up a box at walmart (they are in the snack section of the grocery dept. near the prunes, raisins and other dried fruit. These are nice because I can tear them up into little pieces without getting my hands covered in fruit juices, James can easily pick up the dry pieces and then once safely in his mouth he can enjoy their delicious, juicy flavor!

Bananas
For him to easily eat bananas, I use whole grain infant oatmeal cereal. After slicing the banana up into "James sized" pieces, I toss them in the fine oatmeal. It coats the sticky fruit with a powder layer that lets him pick them up! Brilliant!

Avocado
James loves avocado, simply slice and serve. He did pretty well getting it into his mouth and seemed to enjoy the challenge of the slippery green squares.. but I might consider tossing these in crumbs of some sort, too!

That is all we have done so far, but next on the list are black beans, cheese and pasta! MMMM! Let the fun begin!! :)

Make Up Microbial Contamination

I am always on the lookout for ways to make my family healthier. This one is specific to me, after checking out a few different sites I am pleased to say my eyes and face will be happier and healthier in the new year!
Did you know make up harbors microorganisms? It can be contaminated with the nasty, creepy, crawlies.. who wants to smear THAT all over your pretty faces??
Mascara seems to be the one of the greatest causes for concern; one study found that within just three months of use, 40 percent of tested mascara tubes had some of the said "creepy crawlies" growing in them.
So what should you do? Replace your make up every three months!
As far as your brushes go, clean them with a mild soap of your choice, olive oil and vinegar! Liquid castile is recommended, but I cannot use it since I am allergic! :( So I use a little squirt of baby shampoo. Before you begin, collect all the things you will need:
  • dirty makeup brushes
  • 3  small cups
  • a plate
  • clean towel (optional)
  • olive oil
  • castile soap (or any mild soap)
  • warm water
  • white vinegar

Remember to be gentle with your brushes. Don’t press the bristles hard, spread the bristles or pull on them! Keep in mind that you are only cleaning the bristles, you don’t want to dip the shaft of the brush into the water or vinegar since it may ruin the the glue that keeps the bristles on the brush.
  1. In one of the cups mix warm water and soap to make a bath for your brushes.
  2. Fill another cup with enough vinegar to dip the bristles of your longest brush.
  3. Pour a small puddle of extra virgin olive oil on a plate.
  4. Dip a brush in the oil and run it back and forth across the plate until it stops leaving dirty streaks.
  5. Dip the brush in the soapy water.
  6. Remove the brush from the soapy water and gently swirl it in the palm of your hand.
  7. Repeat steps 5 and 6 until the brush is clean.
  8. Gently squeeze the bristles to remove excess water.
  9. Dip the bristles in white vinegar to sanitize them, then rinse them under a faucet with warm water.
  10. If you want to clean the handle of the brush, wipe it with a moist, clean towel and allow them to dry!
